Now that summer barbecues are winding down and you’re cleaning the grill, check if your propane tank is empty. If you’re not planning to refill it for fall tailgates and want to get rid of it, there are several important steps to follow for your safety and to help protect our county-wide environment.
Why Does Proper Propane Tank Disposal Matter?
Improper disposal can pose serious risks. These tanks contain pressurized gas, which can be hazardous if incorrectly handled. When disposed of improperly, tanks can leak harmful substances or even explode if exposed to heat or pressure. Also, propane tanks that end up in landfills can contribute to environmental pollution.
How Do You Get Rid of a Propane Tank?
- Don’t Toss It in the Trash or Recycling
Avoid placing propane tanks in regular household trash or recycling bins. These containers are not equipped to handle the pressurized gas inside the tank and can pose significant safety risks. Similarly, do not leave them at the curbside for regular waste collection. - Contact Your Propane Supplier
Many propane suppliers offer take-back programs for empty or old tanks. Contact your propane provider to see if they provide this service. They may also be able to guide you to local disposal resources if they don’t offer take-back services themselves. - Drop It off at Our Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW)
If a take-back program isn’t available, Rockland Green will happily help get rid of your tank. Our HHW is our drop-collection facility that accepts household hazardous waste materials from county residents and qualifying small businesses.
- We accept propane tanks that are one pound or 20 pounds
- We also accept helium tanks and fire extinguishers
One of the best parts is that our trained staff will unload the tank for you – you do not need to get out of the car! Here’s the HHW drop-off schedule. Before you arrive, however, please prepare your tank for disposal… - Follow Safety Precautions
Do not try to puncture or cut into the tank to empty it because that may cause a dangerous explosion or fire. Our HHW doesn’t require you to empty the tank anyway! Just as long as your tank weighs less than 20 pounds when you drop it off.
Empty or not, handle propane tanks with care. Wear gloves and avoid exposing the tank to extreme temperatures or open flames. When you transport it to our HHW, make sure the tank is in an upright position to prevent any residual gas from leaking. - Seek Professional Assistance if Needed
If you’re uncertain about how to dispose of small propane tanks or large ones, don’t hesitate to call our HHW Hotline at (845) 364-2444 for guidance and support.
